As you can see from the 1520 Tapestry from Lisbon, Portugal, musicians of African ancestry have contributed to the world of musical sound for centuries. This page, the BlackPast.org Music Library, uses YouTube videos to provide representative samples of the varied types of music composed and performed by these artists from around the world. They begin with a composition written in the year 530, by Ethiopian religious and musical scholar St. Yared. His composition is called Deggua Yared.
This musical library brings together all of the more than 400 artists profiled on BlackPast.org in all the major musical genres. You can see below their names, composition\song, the year it was released, and the genre. Click on the name of the artist and you will be taken to his or her entry. There you will find the most popular composition\song by that artist. You can also sort this list by artist, song, genre, and year. Just hover your cursor over the category title, for example, year, and the list will sort chronologically by year the song was released or composed. This list will expand regularly with new entries profiling additional artists.
