Hooton, Laura

Laura Fleisch is a graduate student in the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she also has a focus in African American history and Black Studies.  Her B.A. in history is from the University of California, San Diego.  At UCSD she worked as a research assistant for Professor Luis Alvarez.  Professor Alvarez was also the adviser for the Honors Program, culminating in her thesis “Little Liberia: The Fight for Equality.”  Laura also worked as an intern for the Maritime Museum of San Diego, where she created parts of the permanent exhibit “Enlightened Voyages” on the HMS Surprise.  Laura specializes in Black History, with a focus on social movements, as well as Mexican American history, Mexican history, and Borderlands history.
