Joyce Dunbar
Executive Director

Before her appointment with BlackPast.org, Dr. Dunbar spent a decade in development work, mediating the extension of healthcare and communications infrastructure in West and East Africa. She has taught at various institutions in the USA, including Central State University, The Ohio State University, and Kalamazoo College, where she facilitated the introduction of Swahili language teaching and the extension of study abroad to South Africa. She has published on nationalism and citizenship in Africa, and since 2015, has been exploring the expression of these same concepts in the motifs employed by artists of the Black Arts Movement that emerged in America’s mid-west region in the mid-twentieth century. She is the current board president for the Columbus Empowerment Corporation, which supports entrepreneurship and urban development.
