Robert Slawson is a retired Radiation Oncologist. He received his undergraduate degree from Morningside College and his M.D. from the State University of Iowa. He was awarded the degree of Fellow of the American College of Radiology. Retiring from the University of Maryland School of Medicine after 29 years, he became a volunteer at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. He has lectured extensively on Civil War medicine and written articles about many aspects of Civil War medicine including a book on the early experience of African Americans in medicine and the Civil War: Prologue to Change: African Americans in Medicine in the Civil War Era. He currently volunteers at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine as a researcher and is on their speaker’s bureau on aspects of Civil War medicine.
