Valerie Cunningham is a native of New Hampshire and principle of the African American Resource Center since 1987. Her research helped establish the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail in 1995. She writes and lectures on the Black experience in northern New England from the period of Colonial slavery to the modern Civil Rights Movement. Her writing includes co-authoring Black Portsmouth: Three Centuries of African-American Heritage (University Press of New England, 2004).
