Independent Historian

Kylie Nicole Gemmell is descendant of the Suquamish Tribe in Washington State. Her grandparents are Evelynne and Leonard Gemmell and she is a descendant of cultural bearer Julia Jacobs. She is a master’s student at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is completing her master’s degree in American Indian Studies and focusing her research on prisoner reentry for Native Americans. She graduated from Western Washington University in 2016 with a degree from Fairhaven College and a minor in Education and Social Justice. Through Fairhaven College, she designed her own concentration and course of study titled “Power of Voice: Understanding Intersecting Identities Through Narratives.” Through her program she looked at the lack of representation by communities of color sharing their own narratives. Before graduating, she taught a course on Queer Indigenous Studies.  Kylie is now a graduate student in American Indian Studies at UCLA.
