Beryl Satter is Associate Professor of History and chair of the Department of History at Rutgers University-Newark. She received her Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. Her B.A. was from Barnard College, and she also holds a Master of Theological Studies degree from Harvard Divinity School. She has authored several articles concerning race and gender, including “Marcus Garvey, Father Divine and the Gender Politics of Race Difference and Race Neutrality," American Quarterly 47:4 (March 1996): 43-76. She is also the author of Each Mind a Kingdom: American Women, Sexual Purity, and the New Thought Movement, 1875-1920 (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1999).
