David S. Reynolds is a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is the author, most recently, of Mightier than the Sword: ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ and the Battle for America and the editor of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin: The Splendid Edition. His previous books include John Brown, Abolitionist, Walt Whitman’s America, Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson, and Beneath the American Renaissance: The Subversive Imagination in the Age of Emerson and Melville. He is the winner of a number of prizes, including the Bancroft Prize, the Christian Gauss Award, the Ambassador Book Award, and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
